Chapter 7

After the women left I called Jason and shared with him the information Emmy Jean had given us. As usual, he already knew all about Stuart Bronson, including the fact that his criminal as well as his military records had been sealed. I could tell he wasn’t going to give me much more than that, so I chatted about his wife Alana and his kids for a few minutes and then got off the phone.

I wasn’t sure taking a drive to Wahiawa to check out the address Beth had given us was worth the effort, but I still wasn’t ready to leave Luke alone with Courtney, whose car I saw was still in the drive, even though I likewise wasn’t sure I was ready to stay for strictly social reasons.

Janice offered to take Elva home and Sandy seemed thrilled to be left with Luke’s dogs, Duke and Dallas, so it was just Luke and me who set out on the drive into the center of the island.

“I love Elva and I love her friends, but after listening to Emmy Jean and Tammy Rhea talking nonstop for two hours I’m happy for the quiet,” I commented.

“My sisters can talk up a southern storm, but I get what you’re saying. Still, I have to admit the sisters from the south are beginning to make me homesick. It’s been a while since I’ve heard a good, drawn-out y’all.”

“Have you been home to visit since moving here?” I wondered.

“Not so far. First I was dealing with the remodel on the house and then my family started visiting me in droves, so there didn’t seem to be a reason to make the trip. I suppose I might think about going over the holidays this year.”

It made me sad to think of Luke not being here then.

“I noticed Courtney doesn’t seem to have much of an accent at all, even though I remember you saying she was brought up near where you lived.”

“Courtney had a very cultured upbringing in which slurring and slang were frowned upon. My own mother wasn’t a fan of southern dialect, which is why I don’t have much of an accent either. When I moved to New York I lost what little I had.”

“Clint, on the other hand, sounds exactly the way I’d picture a cowboy sounding, although he doesn’t look much like a cowboy.”

“Clint can be whoever he needs to be to get what he wants at any given time.”

“It sounds like you still aren’t getting along.”

“We’re tolerating each other for the time being. At some point I’m going to have to keep my promise to Courtney and get rid of him.”

“It seems to me Courtney’s relationship with Clint is her problem, not yours. She’s a big girl; I’d let her handle it herself. If she doesn’t want to confront Cliff she can stay away from your place until he leaves.”

Luke smiled and put his hand over mine on the seat between us. “That’s one of the things I like best about you.
